HENDERSON, NV (FOX5) -
The Henderson Police Department has identified the three SWAT officers who opened fire on a suspect on Wednesday inside the Albertsons grocery store at Lake Mead Boulevard and Boulder Highway:
- Sgt. Todd Wellman has been with the department since 1990
- Officer Ritch Melchert has been with the department since 1997.
- Officer Wavie Reed has been with the Henderson Police Department since 2000.
The three SWAT officers are on routine paid administrative leave pending an investigation.
The incident began at 3:45 when an Albertsons employee was confronted by the suspect, identified as Jake Goldsborough, 36, in the rear restroom of the store.
Another person indicated Goldsborough had a child with him. It turned out to be an infant-sized doll.
After barricading himself inside the restroom and refusing commands to come out, Goldsborough exited, pointing what looked to SWAT officers like a semi-automatic handgun at them. SWAT officers then opened fire on him.
The firearm turned out to be a pellet gun police said was changed to look like a real handgun.
Goldsborough was taken to Sunrise Hospital where at last check he was listed in critical condition.
Goldsborough was charged with three counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Police said he has prior arrests in Nevada, California and Washington.
