HENDERSON, NV (FOX5) -
An officer-involved shooting on Wednesday inside of the Albertsons grocery store at Lake Mead Parkway and Boulder Highway in Henderson has left a man with critical injuries.
Police said they received a call about a man with a gun at around 3:35 p.m. An employee had been confronted by a man holding a gun in the rear restroom. Another person in the store indicated the man had a child with him.
Officers attempted to convince the man to exit the bathroom from the other side of the door but he would not do so. Police had difficulty understanding what the man was saying through the closed door.
A SWAT team arrived at around 3:45 p.m. and urged the suspect to leave the bathroom. That's when, police said, he slowly exited the restroom, pointing a gun at officers. Three SWAT officers fired on the man, striking him.
The suspect was taken to Sunrise Medical Center's trauma unit for treatment.
Police later determined the man was armed with a pellet gun which they said was made to look like a real semi-automatic handgun.
Police did not find a child but did find what they described as an infant-sized doll on the changing table along with the man's belongings.
Police are still working to determine the identity of the suspect and why he barricaded himself inside the restroom.
The identities of the officers who shot the man will be released in 48 hours. They have been placed on routine administrative leave pending an investigation.
