A new request for the Obama administration on the petition section of the White House website requests to "allow Oregon to vote on and leave the union peacefully and remain an ally to the nation."
There are no last names on the petition, but "Kristopher W." of Tillamook is listed as the creator and the reasons listed for the effort include complaints about federal government and unfavorable policies it imposes on Oregon.
Nearly two dozen other petitions are making similar demands about other states. Each petition needs 25,000 signatures to get an official response from the Obama administration, the website stated.
"In any case, that's all they'll get is a response," said Bill Funk, constitutional law professor at the Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland.
"It's not in the president's power under the Constitution to let a state secede," said Funk. "In fact, it's not clear whether anyone, even Congress, could let a state secede. It might, in fact, take a constitutional amendment."
So why bother? Funk said the efforts are likely about attention than anything else.
"In many ways, this is a media exercise designed to state the views very strongly of certain people who lost the election that they didn't like the outcome of it," Funk said.
Late Monday night, the Oregon petition had about 9,000 signatures and the petition concerning Texas already had more than double the 25,000 needed for an administration response.
