Can makeup cause early menopause?

Posted: Updated:

A new study shows some chemicals in makeup could cause early menopause in women.

They're called phthalates. It's a bonding agent found in plastics and other items.

Washington University's School of Medicine studied phthalate levels in 5,700 women. They spoke about their findings at the American Society of Reproductive Medicine conference in San Diego.

The study found those with higher amounts in their urine or blood went through menopause more than two years faster than their peers. Some women had it 15 years earlier than they should, in their mid 30s.

Dr. Daliah Wachs said this news is anything but pretty.

"Bone loss, osteoporosis, they've even found links to cancer as well, for those with early menopause," she said.

Professional makeup artist Harmony Medina was surprised by the findings but wasn't completely shocked, because she knows makeup can have many chemicals.

"I do a lot of research when it comes to knowing what the best product is," Medina said.

Her favorite makeup brand is Vegan. She says many of her clients do wonder what kind of stuff she is putting on their face and encourages women to do their research.

"Makeup is superficial, but when it comes to their insides, I think that's probably more important," Medina said.

Wachs adds this is about more than just a pretty face - the chemical binding agents are found in everything. "Our soaps, our emulsifiers, our detergents, makeup, even hair sprays," she said.

Phthalates also found in bottled water, some pharmaceutical pills and packaged foods.

While there may be no escaping these toxins, experts say doing a little research before your next shopping trip may calm your nerves. You can find some items that may fit better in your lifestyle.

Phthalates are easily released into the environment. In 2008, Congress banned certain phthalates in children's toys. Besides studies showing they can cause reproductive issues, the chemicals have also been found to cause asthma and diabetes.
