The nation's coaches picked the Runnin' Rebels as the 19th best men's basketball team for the preseason last week.
On Monday, the members of the Mountain West media picked University of Nevada, Las Vegas to finish second this season behind San Diego State.
The school's athletics department said the school received eight first-place votes and finished two points behind the Aztecs in the preseason poll
A panel comprised of conference media made the selections, UNLV noted.
Despite the slight from the top spot, UNLV garnered several key individual preseason honors.
Junior Mike Moser, Jr. was the lone forward in the Mountain West preseason all-conference team.
Sophomore guard Bryce Dejean-Jones was named preseason co-newcomer of the year. Dejean-Jones, a transfer from University of Southern California, shared the honor with San Diego State's Dwayne Polee II.
Former Findlay Prep star Anthony Bennett grabbed freshman of the year honors.
The Runnin' Rebels begin the season with an exhibition game against Dixie State on Nov. 7. The team opens the season against Northern Arizona on Nov. 12. Both games are slated for Thomas and Mack Center.
