Romney garners NRA endorsement

Posted: Updated:

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney garnered a key endorsement from the nation's gun owners.

The National Rifle Association said Thursday its Political Victory Fund is throwing support behind Romney and running mate Paul Ryan.

NRA's Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre said the current Obama administration has harmed gun-owning rights with recent legislation.

"We live in an America that is getting harder to recognize every day led by a President who mocks our values, belittles our faith, and is threatened by our freedom," said La Pierre.

The NRA cited the appointment of anti-gun nominees to the Supreme Court and a United Nations Arms Trade Treaty as reasons for the group's opposition to President Obama.

According to website Politico, Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, has gone on record to recognize gun ownership rights among "law-abiding gun owners." According to Romney's campaign website, the former governor also vowed to punish to "the fullest extent" criminals who misuse firearms to commit crimes.

The next presidential debate is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 16 in Hempstead, N.Y. The debate is slated to focus on foreign and domestic policy, according to reports.
