LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Capitalizing upon and upping the ante on the longstanding rivalry between UNLV and Nevada, Gov. Brian Sandoval and NV Energy President and CEO Michael Yackira have announced a new competition.

The Governor's Series will see the schools compete in athletics as well as academics.

Each year, either the Rebels or the Wolf Pack will be bestowed with a trophy, to be presented at a ceremony on the campus of the winning school.

Fans can track their school's progress by looking for the Governor's Series section on UNLVRebles.com and NevadaWolfPack.com. Points will be awarded as follows:

  • Head-to-head competitions are worth three points
  • Series or home-and-home competitions are worth three points with head-to-head competition in the conference tournament serving as a tie-breaker.
  • Highest finish in Mountain West Tournaments will be used for sports that don't compete head-to-head in the conference tournament.
  • In the event of a tie, the winner of the Battle of the Fremont Cannon football game will be used as a tie-breaker.

In addition, one student-athlete will receive the Bill Ireland Award.

Sports included in the competition are football, women's soccer, women's volleyball, women's cross country, women's swimming and diving, men's and women's basketball, women's indoor and outdoor track and field, baseball, softball, men's and women's golf and men's and women's tennis.
