LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
Volunteers walked for a cause Wednesday morning as part of International Walk to School Day.
Sunrise Children's Hospital and Safe Kids Clark County partnered with FedEx and UNLV Safe Communities to advocate safer walking environments for kids.
The event took place at 10 elementary schools throughout the valley and kicked off at Gray Elementary School.
Volunteers walked with thousands of local students to identify unsafe intersections, streets in need of sidewalks and areas where pedestrians had either been hit or injured by a motor vehicle.
Organizers of the event said education is important when it comes to creating safer, more pedestrian-friendly communities.
They said Walk to School Day works to get that message out, especially when the National Center for Health Statistics reports that road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death among children ages 3-14 worldwide.
