LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
The developers of a water park yet to be built in the southwest end of the Las Vegas Valley reached to the area's past in announcing its new name.
Developers, who included Andre Agassi and a member of the Thomas and Mack family, announced Thursday the new water park at Fort Apache Road will be called "Wet 'N' Wild Las Vegas."
Las Vegans should be familiar with "Wet 'N' Wild" since a water park of the same name was a popular cool-off spot for locals and tourists.
The old water park was open in 1990 on the Las Vegas Strip, adjacent to the Sahara Casino and Hotel. The park folded in 2004.
Developers said the water park will only be "Wet 'N' Wild" in name and is not expected to replicate any of the features of the old water park.
Developers of the newer water park, which was once called "Splash Canyon," aimed to bring back a permanent wet attraction to the area.
A news conference unveiled modified plans to the water park still awaiting construction in the 7000 block of S. Fort Apache.
The water park had originally slated to open on Memorial Day this year.
Developers announced in February, though, that construction delays pushed back the opening to Memorial Day 2013.
Developers also announced that additional investors boosted the cost of the water park to $50 million, allowing for, what they called, better and bigger enhancements.
The water park's investment team includes SBP Partners, Andre Agassi and Karen Thomas of the Thomas and Mack family. Developers also noted the project is a public-private partnership with Clark County and the Howard Hughes Corporation.
A news conference announcing the plans took place during the World Waterpark Association Tradeshow, which is happening this week at the Paris Hotel and Casino.
