Southern Nevada Health District said a woman who was diagnosed as the first 2012 human case of West Nile virus in Clark County has died.
SNHD made the confirmation as it also announced four more human cases in the local outbreak.
The 75-year-old woman who became the first human case of the blood-borne virus was hospitalized in September, SNHD said.
The newly affected patients, according to SNHD, include a 25-year-old woman who was diagnosed with the more serious neuroinvasive form of the virus; a 52-year-man with the less serious form; a 68-year-old woman and a 64-year-old man, both of whom were hospitalized with the neuroinvasive form.
The recent death is the fourth West Nile-related death in Clark County since 2003, health officials said.
Health officials also identified a second West Nile-positive mosquito pool in the 89145. Previously, zip code 89107 was identified as a West Nile mosquito pool.
According to SNHD, the Department of Agriculture noted a horse in the 89130 zip code had contracted the virus. SNHD originally said the horse had to be euthanized, but Monday issued a correction saying the horse is alive.
So far, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported more than 3,500 cases and 147 deaths through Sept. 25.
