Maryland Parkway businesses struggling to reopen

Posted: Updated:
LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

It's been more than a week since the Las Vegas Valley was hit by a massive rainstorm that flooded homes and businesses.

One of the hardest hit areas was near the campus of UNLV. Several businesses have yet to open. Now, some relief is on the way.

One business at the Promenade building on Maryland Parkway has reopened. SHARE, a community-based program created to provide aid to businesses and residents affected by the flooding, could be key to the rest of the businesses getting back to business.

What was once a popular hangout for UNLV students is practically a ghost town.

"Once I saw what happened and I saw where the water was, I thought it was over. I thought my shop was done," said Robert Taylor, owner of Fade Em All University.

While Taylor was able to reopen, many of his neighbors, including Wazzup Pizza and Coast-To-Coast Denim, are still closed.

"We aren't even mad. We are thankful to even cut hair, to even recoup and try to make the money back, pay for the damage," Taylor said.

SHARE founder Arnold Stalk organized a meeting Friday with other disaster relief agencies to map out a plan to save businesses.

"We are calling on the community, we are calling on the casinos, all the major businesses here to help us buy the materials that we need – food, clothing," Stalk said.

Taylor hopes the community will step up and provide a helping hand.

"We are all family, we all send customers to each other to make this work," Taylor said.

Crews will begin cleaning up the businesses, painting and repairing on Tuesday.

Fade Em All University will hold a karaoke fundraiser next Saturday to raise funds for Wazzup Pizza. SHARE is also providing assistance to affected homeowners.

If you'd like to volunteer your time or make a donation to SHARE, call (702)-624-5792 or visit www.arnoldstalk.com.
