GLADSTONE, MO (KCTV) -
A family is devastated and pleading for answers after their father was beaten to death while on a service call for AT&T.
"He's a teddy bear," Bill Mashburn said about his father, Kevin Mashburn. "He's easily the most kind-hearted, gentle selfless man that I've ever met."
Mashburn, 58, was on a service call about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday at an apartment complex in Gladstone when he was attacked. The killer hit him in the head with a heavy metal object.
Police said Mashburn called AT&T to get them to call 911. He apparently attempted to flee the scene and witnesses described hearing him flash his vehicle lights and sound the horn. His truck window was smashed out.
He was found about 3:30 a.m. and rushed to the hospital where he died from his injuries.
AT&T announced Thursday afternoon that the company will pay $100,000 for information leading to arrest and conviction of those responsible for Mashburn's death. Anyone with information is asked to call AT&T Asset Protection at 1-800-807-4205.
"AT&T is committed to doing all it can to assist in bringing anyone involved in the death of Kevin Mashburn to justice," AT&T Missouri president John Sondag said in a statement. "Kevin devoted his entire adult working life to AT&T, and was widely admired by his colleagues. His sudden, tragic passing is deeply felt here at AT&T, and we want to again offer our deepest condolences to Kevin's family and many friends."
Bill Mashburn described his father as a loving grandfather, husband, friend and co-worker. He said his son was a superhero to him.
"There's thousands of men just like him out there," Mashburn said. "I mean who knows who is going to be next?
Mashburn worked for AT&T for 41 years, joining the company as a technician immediately after he graduated from high school. He had been married for 33 years.
The family needs answers, Bill Mashburn said.
"If everybody had a Dad like mine, like ours, then stuff like this wouldn't happen," he said. "I mean you'd just be raised a little better than that."
He said his father was worthy of being in the news on any given day "just for being a rock star human being."
"It's unfortunate that anyone's learning about him now, after something like this," Bill Mashburn said."The world lost a gifted man."
His father is survived by three additional children and a grandchild along with a host of family members, friends and loved ones.
Mashburn was a Communications Workers of American Union steward and an active participant in the United Way. He received a service excellence award in 2011 for the work he did to restore services after Joplin was devastated by a tornado.
The nearly 20 detectives working the case hope the increased reward fund will help spur people to turn over leads and tips.
Bill Mashburn is also grateful for the large reward.
"It's huge. Any information that can be provided to the authorities to help figure out what went on and for what reason would be a huge relief for us," he said.
The Mashburn is also grateful for the overwhelming amount of support they have received in the wake of the tragedy.
If you have any information, call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
