Obama campaign seizes on Romney 'victims' video

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Mitt Romney's campaign is not disputing a video that shows the Republican presidential candidate saying that almost half of Americans "believe that they are victims."

The Romney campaign issued a statement to clarify the remarks, which were captured during a private fundraiser and posted Monday on the website of the magazine Mother Jones. When the comments were made isn't clear.

In the video, Romney says that 47 percent of Americans support Obama. The Republican nominee says that those people are dependent upon government and believe they are victims.

Clarifying the remarks, Romney spokesman Gail Gitcho says Romney wants to "help all Americans struggling in the Obama economy."

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina says it's "hard to serve as president for all Americans when you've disdainfully written off half the nation."
