Memorial growing at site of Thursday’s fatal crash

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Hundreds of people - some family, some friends - visited the area where Thursday morning four people were killed and eight others were injured in a crash caused by what police said was a combination of alcohol and speed.

The corner Friday identified two of the people who were killed: Johnni Lee Garner, 49; Gerber Herman Ayala-Tomasino, Jr., 24.

Among those visiting were Nichelle Garner and her family. Her mother, 49-year-old Johnni Garner, was one of the four people who died at the scene. Her son-in-law, Chris Lorenzo, said telling his two small children their grandmother is not coming home has been very hard.  As for his wife, "She kept on thinking about her mom. She's taking it real hard," he said.

Garner was a nurse's assistant at Sunrise Hospital where word of her death hit staff hard, especially in the emergency room where she worked and showed a lot of compassion for patients.

"She was able to reach out and help them just by her calming, compassionate nature," said Minta Albietz, a nursing supervisor at Sunrise.

Another visitor to the crash scene was Cecilia Mendes. She worked with the other woman killed in the crash at Treasure Island, where they were both in housekeeping. That woman's name has yet to be released by the coroner. Mendes said the housekeeping staff took the news very hard.

"Almost a year ago someone that worked in the same station as her died in a car accident also," Mendes said.

Many who stopped by the crash site brought offerings of flowers, candles, teddy bears and even fresh fruit in memory of the victims of the crash
