LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
A temporary bus stop was set up Friday, just feet away from where a vehicle slammed into a crowd of awaiting passengers during the Thursday morning work commute.
The wreck on Spring Mountain Road near Decatur Boulevard killed four people and sent eight others to the hospital.
It happened just before 6:30 a.m. near Decatur Boulevard.
Spring Mountain didn't reopen until about 7:30 p.m., more than 12 hours after what many described as a horrific crash.
Although the wreckage has since cleared away Friday, markings around the stop still illustrated the deadly force of the crash.
Spray painted circles with words like "back pack" and "necklace" were all left by Metro police investigators.
Strangers have also been coming to the crash site, laying down flowers and candles in a show of respect for the four people who died while waiting for a bus.
The images are burned into the minds of the people who live and work near the bus stop. You wouldn't even know it was a bus stop to look at it now. The physical structure was destroyed.
Metro police said a Chevy Monte Carlo went airborne and out of control before plowing into the spot where a group of people was standing.
"My protector, I guess, was protecting me," said bus rider Robert Stamper.
Stamper said he was supposed to be at the bus stop at the time of the crash. He's there most days at that time, waiting to take a bus to work. On Thursday he had a sore throat and stayed home.
"I wouldn't know what to do if it was anyone that I knew, and I hope it wasn't the acquaintances I met this week while I was going to work," Stamper said.
Police said the driver of the car - identified as Gary Lee Hosey Jr., 24, of Las Vegas - was drunk and had three passengers in the car. Eight people were rushed to local hospitals, some still listed in critical condition.
Police have identified the injured as passenger Aklilu Atanaw, 24; passenger Maarig Tewolde, 26; passenger Wendim Fisenar, 31; passenger Tamesgen Adam, 22; pedestrian Zakiya Corner, 29; pedestrian Billy Joel Ramirez-Fuentes, 31; pedestrian Zexiang Wang, 19.
"It upset me the whole day. I've just been thinking all day about this," said Julio Bazan.
People who stopped by the crash site lit candles and said it is a very busy stop.
The crash was captured by a camera at a nearby Carl's Jr. restaurant.
"We viewed it (the tape) and it's horrendous to see what happened," said Metro's Sgt. Richard Strader.
Police said there was a lot to investigate and a great deal to clean up.
Hosey, who was injured and booked in absentia into the Clark County Detention Center, faces serious charges.
Two of the eight injured victims were treated and released from University Medical Center. The coroner has not yet released the identities of those who died.
