LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Folks in the Las Vegas valley caught a glimpse of a strange occurrence in the sky early Thursday.

Many viewers speculated as to what it was, since the hanging object looked too thin to be a cloud. Some said it was a light not unlike an aurora borealis.

Officials at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico explained the object came from missile target test.

According to White Sands, a target missile was launched from Fort Wingate, N.M. sometime overnight. A second missile was launched to hit the target object, officials said.

White Sands noted some people may have seen an explosion occur due to the missiles' collision.

Officials said the high-end missile testing is done on occasion, at least once a year.
