LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
An organization examining West Nile virus in the United States said 2012 has seen the more cases than years past.
According to the National Pest Management Association, Centers for Disease Control reported a total of 2,636 cases of the blood-borne virus, with about 118 of them resulting in deaths.
Forty-eight states have reported cases in 2012, NPMA said.
The group warned this could be one of the most severe outbreaks on record.
The group also said the public must stay vigilant when it comes to the threat of mosquitoes. They mention removing area of standing water and screening all windows and doors.
In the Las Vegas valley, the Southern Nevada Health District reported infected mosquitoes in the 89107 zip code. The reported mosquitoes are coming at the peak of the pests' season.
