LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
As Democratic Party delegates gather in Charlotte, NC, for their convention, locally, party supporters are already lining up, volunteering to help with the president's campaign. "It shows just how important Nevadans feel about re-electing the president that we have volunteers coming in to work on their day off," said Zach Hudson, spokesman for the Nevada Democratic Party.
Political commentator Mitch Fox predicts that Nevada's delegates will be treated much differently at this convention compared to the Republican Convention in Tampa Bay last week. "Nevada delegation members are being wined and dined by the famous, the leadership, the hierarchy of the Democratic Party nationally," he said.
Last week during roll call some Nevada Republican delegates refused to unanimously vote for Mitt Romney. Seventeen voted to nominate Ron Paul, five abstained while five Romney-loyal delegates voted to nominate him as planned.
That could be one of the reasons why Nevada's Republican delegation was not given a higher profile given Nevada is considered a swing state. "You know the delegates that went were not all together. But at this convention, all the Democrats will be together and focused," said Rozita Lee, vice chair of the National Federation of Filipino Americans Association. "We are a state that they are looking at as far as votes. We are going to be the deciding vote," she added.
Fox agreed. "The Democrats in Nevada I think have said Barrack Obama is our president, we're not running away from him," he said.
Meanwhile, the local Democratic election machine is gearing up for the weeks leading up to the November vote. "We're out there every day, registering voters and making phone calls to do our part to re-elect the president," said Hudson.
