LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A 5-year-old girl got a hold of a gun placed on a night stand and accidentally shot her father, Las Vegas Metro police said Thursday.

According to police, the shooting happened about 8:15 a.m. in a gated neighborhood in the 100 block of Castle Course Avenue, just off S. Fort Apache Road, near the Rhodes Ranch Golf Club.

Police said the child got a hold of a gun on a night stand, wanting to put it away.

The gun, though, accidentally discharged, hitting the girl's father in the arm, according to Metro.

Police said the child had been sleeping with her parents in their bed just before the shooting.

There were also several firearms in the home, but most of them were under lock and key, police noted.

The man was transported to University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Detectives with Metro's Abuse/Neglect Detail were called to investigate the shooting.
