Flood waters close roads, strand motorists

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The National Weather Service Wednesday extended a flash flood warning for central Clark County until 3:45 p.m. The extension came as flood waters strand some motorists, leaving many Las Vegas Valley roadways underwater.

A flood advisory was issued until 6:30 p.m.

The Clark County Fire Department responded to 18 weather-related traffic issues before noon Wednesday. They responded to an additional 18 calls to help motorists stranded in flood waters.

An emergency operations center was set up at CCFD headquarters to coordinate weather-related emergency response efforts in Clark County.

City officials in Henderson encouraged residents to stay at home and off roadways as numerous water covered streets were closed to traffic.

 Flights in and out of McCarran International Airport were delayed as heavy rain hit the area.

The flood warning comes as part of a significant weather event occurring in southern Nevada. FOX5 meteorologist Ted Pretty said Wednesday that moisture in the area created greater chances of rain through Wednesday and Thursday.
