LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
A spokesperson for the Dairy Queen Corporation said the fact a weapon was used to stop a hold-up at a Las Vegas location was not consistent with the company.
On Tuesday, Dean Peters, a spokesperson for American Dairy Queen, released a statement on the company's behalf, assuring the safety of workers and customers at locally-owned franchises, like the one in Las Vegas, is its top priority.
In a statement, Peters said:
"We are shocked and saddened by the events that occurred in Las Vegas over the weekend. The location involved in the incident is locally owned and operated and we have been in contact with that operator to offer our assistance. We understand they are cooperating fully with authorities. The safety and well-being of those who work in the locally-owned stores, as well as the safety of our customers, are both top priorities. We do not believe weapons in the workplace are consistent with those priorities and we do not encourage the practice."
The statement was released a couple of days after a hold-up at the Dairy Queen on Sahara Avenue and Maryland Parkway.
According to Las Vegas Metro police, 38-year-old Bongkuk Pak entered the eatery, threatening workers with a sword. Detectives said a worker at the restaurant retrieved a gun and shot Pak at least twice.
Police said Pak was transported to Sunrise Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Metro also said an alleged accomplice to the incident – 47-year-old Carol Matteo – was arrested and charged with robbery with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery and burglary.
