LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
Officials formally cut the ribbon on multi-million dollar I-15 redesign project Wednesday.
A six-mile stretch of I-15 received $246.5 million in changes, stretching from Tropicana Avenue to just south of Silverado Ranch Boulevard.
The project included widening the freeway, adding northbound and southbound access roads, redesigning five interchanges and building 26 new bridge sections, 35 retaining walls and sound walls. The projects goals included creating a more efficient I-15 commute from Tropicana to Silverado Ranch, improved safety (merging traffic is now separated from mainline traffic).
Officials say the project increases capacity for tourist traffic. It was designed to create faster and easier access to Strip resort properties and McCarran International Airport.
Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval was among officials on hand for the official I-15 ribbon cutting Wednesday.
