LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
About 4,000 Las Vegas area students will be given free sackpacks filled with school supplies Wednesday.
The sackpacks are provided by the Office Depot Foundation's National Backpack Program, and will be distributed to children served by area non-profit organizations, schools and other agencies.
"In keeping with our mission - Listen Learn Care − we created these fun and exciting sackpacks in response to what kids have told us they like," said Mary Wong, president of Office Depot Foundation. "Every year, we have seen our donations bring hope to children whose families might not be able to afford to buy school supplies."
Now in its 12th year, the National Backpack Program will distribute 400,000 sackpacks around the world in 2012. By the end of the year, Office Depot and the Office Depot Foundation will have helped more than 2.9 million children since the inception of the program in 2001.
Las Vegas organizations will be given sackpacks for children during a "Back-to-School Celebration" in Las Vegas Wednesday. The event is not a public school supply giveaway.
The non-profit organizations, schools and agencies scheduled to receive sackpacks in Las Vegas include:
• After-School All-Stars Las Vegas
• Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada
• Child Focus
• Clark County School District
• Communities In Schools of Southern Nevada
• Nevada Children's Center
