LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
A 21-year-old man accused of shooting a gun into the air and killing a person at a Las Vegas apartment complex was scheduled to appear for an initial court hearing Wednesday.
Anton Lewis was arrested on Aug. 10 just hours after the early morning shooting at the Twain Palms Apartments on Twain Avenue near Paradise Road.
According to Las Vegas Metro police, a fight had erupted from a party taking place at one of the apartment units. The fight spilled out to a parking area and that led to shots being fired during the scuffle.
Those shots struck 28-year-old Derrion Banks, who had been witnessing the fight from a second floor apartment landing. Banks died from wounds to the chest and arm, according to the Clark County Coroner's office.
Police were anonymously tipped about Lewis' involvement in the shooting. Officers caught up with Lewis, his father and his brother some 12 hours after the shooting during a traffic stop.
After being consented of a search of their car, police found a weapon in the trunk of the vehicle which led to Lewis fleeing from officers on foot. Police were able to catch up with him and took him into custody.
According to an arrest report, Lewis gave different accounts of where he was during the shooting, at times, denying he had been at the apartment complex at all.
Lewis' brother, Terrell, told police the two were at the apartment complex and Anton shot from his gun to break up fighting. Terrell also told officers the weapon they recovered was the one used.
Anton Lewis was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on a charge of murder.
His initial court appearance in Las Vegas Justice Court was scheduled for 7:30 a.m.
