LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
Las Vegas Fire and Rescue responded to an apartment fire at the Alpine Village apartment complex on the 900 block of Brush Street near Decatur and Charleston around 12:36 p.m.
Firefighters could see a column of smoke in the sky as they were leaving their stations, so a second alarm was dispatched so extra personnel and equipment could assist at the fire.
When firefighters arrived on scene, fire was showing from an upstairs apartment on the balcony area of a two-story wood frame building with four apartments.
Firefighters had the fire under control within seven minutes.
The apartment below had very minor water damage and the apartment next door, which was vacant, was not damaged.
Fire investigators determined the fire started on the balcony due to careless smoking and was ruled accidental.
Damage was estimated at $25,000.
Two adults and one teen were displaced. Las Vegas Fire and Rescue said this is the second fire the family has suffered in the past two years. Two years ago they lost just about everything as a result of a cooking fire.
There were no reported injuries. Clark County firefighters also assisted at this fire.
This is the third multi-alarm fire at an apartment complex due to careless smoking since May 1, said Las Vegas Fire.
All three fires displaced 48 people, damaged 25 apartments and caused $1,275,000 in damage.
Las Vegas Fire said careless smoking is one of the leading causes of fires in Las Vegas.
