NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV (FOX5) -

A 10-year-old boy is in critical condition at University Medical Center after being shot in the head in a North Las Vegas home.

Police said it happened at around 4:30 p.m. in the 3500 block of Creosote Way, near Gowan Road and Allen Lane. A preliminary investigation suggests the 10-year-old may have accidentally shot himself.

Police say the boy was home alone with his 3-year-old brother at the time of the shooting. According to police, the boys found a handgun and the 10-year-old shot himself. The 3-year-old boy was unharmed.

Police said the victim's mother, identified as Carmen Gustin, arrived home after the shooting, discovered the child and called 911. Gustin has since been arrested for unrelated misdemeanor warrants. No arrests have yet been made in connection with the shooting.

Police said they have been to the home in the past but would not disclose why.

The 3-year-old boy was taken into custody by Child Protective Services pending an investigation. An older teenage brother who was not home at the time of the shooting was also taken into protective custody.

Charges are pending as police continue to investigate the shooting.
