LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
Our local Sikh community is trying to come to grips with this week's killing spree in Oak Creek, WI. On Wednesday evening, they invited the entire community to their temple in northwest Las Vegas to provide them with a glimpse into their religion.
Hundreds of people of different faiths attended to learn, pay their respects and pray for those who lost their lives to a lone gunman.
Dignitaries and other community members and leaders removed their shoes and covered their heads in the temple, or gurdwara, in a show of solidarity and respect.
They prayed for the seven Wisconsin victims, including the gunman.
"We still have no hated for him because our religion does not teach hatred, it only teaches love," said Sikh temple member Amarjit Pannu.
Hank Combs and his family live nearby. He said Wednesday night was a good opportunity for them to learn about their neighbors, an important lesson for his teenage children.
"They're (attendees) nervous coming to something new and different, but like my daughter said, it will teach you something new and make you less ignorant," Combs said.
There are roughly 2,000 Sikh in the Las Vegas Valley. Attendees were provided with informational pamphlets about the religion.
