FOX5 taking live donations Thursday, Friday

Posted: Updated:

FOX5's annual Supply Our Students Drive will take donations of new school supplies live on the air starting Thursday.

NV Energy located at Sahara and Jones will be Thursday's donation location from 6 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.

Friday's live location will be McDonald's located near Sunset and Eastern, also from 6 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.

More information on the S.O.S. Drive can be found here.

The drive is for Las Vegans like Angela McWilliams, a mother of 10, with kids in elementary, middle and high school.

"You get overwhelmed with figuring out how you're going to buy it all," said McWilliams, who estimates school supplies cost her between $500 to $600 a year.

What do we need to continue to help families like the McWilliams family? Everything that might be on a child's supply list!

"Anything from paper towels to hand sanitizer, to pens and pencils. Notebook paper, composition books. All of those thing are the things we're giving out," said Maj. Rhonda Lloyd of the Salvation Army.

"We know the practical realities of this economy, and what we really don't want is our kids to worry about is can they have a backpack, pencils, or paper. They need to focus on the learning aspect," said Tony Sanchez of NV Energy, a FOX5 Take 5 To Care partner.

Donation boxes are also at 85 McDonald's locations throughout the valley.

"The last thing we need is our teachers continuously going into their pockets to try and do this when I know all of us are struggling. When I know we can make a big significant difference," said Clark County Commissioner Lawrence Weekly.
