LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
Clark County Commissioners have approved a plan by Miracle Mile Shops to construct a $2 million escalator on the Las Vegas Strip. The escalator will face northbound connecting the pedestrian bridge at Harmon Avenue to Las Vegas Boulevard.
The project will be funded entirely, and continually maintained by Miracle Mile Shops and Caesars Entertainment.
"We believe visitors on the Las Vegas Strip will greatly benefit from this project connecting the pedestrian bridge at Harmon Avenue to the northeast side of Las Vegas Boulevard," said Clark County Commissioner Mary Beth Scow. "Improving traffic flow on the Strip is important to the Clark County Commission, as we believe it helps keep pedestrians safe."
Construction is expected to begin in September with a projected completion date in the first quarter of 2013. There is currently a southbound facing escalator off of the bridge.
"This initiative is a prime example of public and private entities coming together to create an overall better experience for Las Vegas Strip pedestrians," said Russ Joyner, Miracle Mile Shops president and general manager. "The new escalator will allow pedestrians the opportunity to head directly north or south on the Strip without being redirected and most importantly will reduce the congestion in that area. We feel that these changes will provide Las Vegas tourists, guests of Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino and Miracle Mile Shops convenience and ease when visiting the venues."
Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino is a 1.2 mile retail and entertainment complex featuring 170 specialty stores, 15 restaurants and three live entertainment venues.
