LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
Dummies hanging from nooses were part of an apparent impromptu campaign at multiple billboards around Las Vegas Wednesday morning.
Nevada Highway Patrol first received reports of a black billboard with white writing next to Interstate 15 and Bonanza Road.
On the billboard, the words "Dying for work" were written with a dummy in a business suit hanging underneath by a rope.
The billboard space appeared to belong to Lamar Advertising. The company said the space was not purchased by any company.
Trooper Jeremie Elliott said, though, the billboard appeared to be a publicity stunt.
Later in the morning, FOX5 learned of another billboard location on S. Highland Avenue with a hanging mannequin. On this billboard, the words "Hope you're happy Wall St." were written with a similar mannequin underneath.
Nevada Department of Transportation was called to take down the I-15 advertisement.
Authorities moved to have the billboard removed after a flood of calls to 911 concerning a possible hanging body. Authorities also noted the removal was needed as to not disrupt morning commute drivers.
There was no word on what would be done with the Highland billboard.
Grassroots organization Occupy Las Vegas, which, like the national parent it derives from, has had a history of extreme protests concerning the economy, denied taking part in the billboards.
The group, though, said the messages conveyed in the hanging dummies should not be ignored.
"No matter which opinion you hold, the fact remains that - like the problems of homelessness, unemployment and suicide - these signs cannot be ignored," an Occupy Las Vegas spokesman said in a statement Wednesday.
NHP said an investigation, if any, will be handled by Las Vegas Metro police.
