Sen. Harry Reid is not backing off his accusations that Mitt Romney did not pay his taxes for 10 years.
Reid claims a source told him that, but admits he doesn't know if it's true.
At an event in Las Vegas on Monday, the Senate majority leader kept applying the pressure on Romney to reveal his tax returns.
When pressed, Reid refused to name his source.
"I have made my statement," Reid said. "The burden is not on me. It's on Mitt Romney to produce his income tax returns."
Romney's Nevada campaign spokesman Mason Harrison sent a statement to FOX 5 that said:
"This is just another attempt by Barack Obama's campaign surrogates to distract voters from his failed economic policies, which have yielded 11.6 percent unemployment in Nevada and devastated small businesses and middle class communities. Given that he has no rationale for re-election and no plan to help middle class Americans, it's no surprise President Obama and his allies have resorted to running a campaign of distraction and dishonesty."
FOX 5 political analyst Mitch Fox says this is vintage Reid, engaging in a fight and not backing down.
"He may speak softly, but he carries a big stick, and the big stick is sometimes his mouth," Fox said. "He's basically serving as Obama's hit man and I think he's keeping the attention on the tax returns. Now he took some hits on the Senate floor, he took some hits from political pundits, but Harry Reid is just smiling, saying the issue is still alive and Mitt Romney can end it in a heartbeat."
Romney has released his tax return from 2010 and an estimate from 2011.
He has vowed to release his full 2011 return once it's completed.
