Gillespie out as NLV fire chief

Posted: Updated:
NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV (FOX5) -

FOX5 has confirmed Al Gillespie is no longer the North Las Vegas fire chief.

Gillespie was last month placed on administrative leave. The city said that was in response to an incident during a January fire training exercise in which firefighters suffered some injuries.

However, the firefighters union claimed Gillespie was placed on leave after he "refused to implement what he determined were dangerous cuts in 911 response."

Gillespie has served as the fire chief since 2005.

His total pay and benefits was more than $217,000 last year, according to the website, TransparentNevada.com, which reports public employee salaries.

In a statement, North Las Vegas City Manager Timothy Hacker said Gillespie's release is a personnel matter the details of which are confidential.

Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Buchanan, who has been acting in Gillespie's absence, will remain the city's acting chief for now.
