A Union Pacific train derailed, spilling hazardous materials just east of Caliente in Lincoln County, NV, around 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Officials at the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said nine cars were ruptured; three cars contained ammonium nitrate, a chemical compound commonly used in agriculture as a high-nitrogen fertilizer and as a main component for explosives.
Hazardous materials personnel from cities in California and Salt Lake City, UT, are en route to safely clean up the spill.
The cause of the accident is unknown at this time.
The main rail is closed to all traffic.
