LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
The Federal Bureau of Investigation released the name of a suspect who was shot and killed by an agent Thursday.
The FBI told FOX5 the deceased suspect is 35-year-old Jerome Burchell. He was shot in the parking lot of Arizona Charlie's on Boulder Highway, near Twain.
In a written statement, the FBI said Special Agents from the Las Vegas Field Office were involved in an adversarial shooting while attempting to arrest Burchell - an armed robbery suspect.
Burchell had an arrest warrant for the robbery that happened on May 31, 2011 at a local fast food store. Metro police said he was also a person of interest in a homicide that was committed at an apartment near Decatur and Rancho. In that case, 38-year-old Esteban Meza Jr. was found dead by a friend.
According to the early findings, Burchell ignored the agent's repeated commands, pulled out a weapon and was shot. The number of shots fired was not addressed.
The agent was working as part of the multi-agency Criminal Apprehension Team . Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Spokesman Jose Hernandez said the team is a task force comprised of metro officers, Henderson police and the FBI.
"They're after the guys who think they can hide out in Vegas or hide out in another state," Hernandez said.
The FBI is handling the entire investigation, and said a team of investigators from the main office in Washington is working on the case.
"These investigators are very experienced in the processes and procedures surrounding agent-involved shootings, and will conduct a very thorough investigation," the statement said.
Hernandez noted that the Criminal Apprehension Team makes 30 to 40 arrests of high-profile suspects each month.
"We have several task forces on our department who specifically focus on attempting to locate and apprehend these fugitives, so Vegas is not the small town where you're going to hide out," he said.
The FBI said the investigation is being coordinated with other local and federal law enforcement agencies.
