LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
It may sound obvious but Metro police are warning Vegas drivers not to leave their cars running unattended. In the span of a single week, nine Vegas vehicles were stolen while unattended, running with keys in the ignition.
Police said vehicles are often stolen for use as transportation or chopped and sold as parts. Frequently, stolen vehicles are used in the commission of other crimes.
Leaving a vehicle running while unattended is against the law in Nevada. The exception is commercial vehicles which are being loaded or unloaded. A driver can be given a citation with a fine up to $195.
Additionally, fees for stolen vehicle recovery can range from between $160 and $195. If you can't pay, the vehicle can have a lien filed against it and ownership given to a tow company.
