RENO, NV (FOX5) -

Nevada's tourism commission will chip in $600,000 to this year's National Championship Air Races in Reno as part of a sponsorship deal.

Organizers of the annual show announced Thursday the Nevada Commission on Tourism's unanimous approval to sponsor the event.

The funding is expected to help the event pay a portion of a $2 million insurance premium incurred a year after an air disaster killed 11 and injured more than 70 people.

The Reno Air Racing Association noted the premium jumped by $1.7 million for this year's show.

The commission's chair, Lieutenant Gov. Brian Krolicki, said the air show provides a significant economic impact to the region.

"The National Championship Air Races is an important event, not only for northern Nevada, but for the entire state creating significant economic impact and worldwide exposure for the region," Krolicki said.

Organizers said the annual race attracts more than 200,000 people and accounts for more than $50 million for the region's economy.

The event is scheduled for September 12-16.
