LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A few new environmental-friendly transit buses will be rolling through the Las Vegas valley thanks to a federal grant.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-NV, announced Thursday grants totaling $14,750,000 were approved for the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada.

Reid said $13 million of the funds will be dedicated to the purchase of 24 new compressed natural gas buses. Those vehicles will replace older models in the current fleet.

RTC's fleet consists of 379 vehicles dedicated to 36 routes, according to its website.

"These new CNG buses will help RTC reduce fuel costs and they will improve Nevada's environment by emitting less pollution," Reid said.

The remaining $1,750,000 will go towards RTC's 36-acre bus maintenance facility.

The grants are part of the United States Department of Transportation's State of Good Repair Program.
