LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
A Henderson man arrested after a deadly shooting had been fighting with the victim before opening fire at him, a police report revealed.
Brenton Smith, 45, was arrested July 22 after the incident in the area of Lake Mead Boulevard and H Street.
Las Vegas Metro police said Oliver Hooker, 43, of Hyattsville, Minn., died after being shot at least once.
According to Smith's arrest report, the two had been arguing inside the Seven Seas Bar during the early morning hours.
Witnesses told police the two took the argument outside. That was when Hooker appeared to have hit Smith.
Smith appeared to be reaching for a gun in his waistband causing Hooker to push him to the ground, the report said.
Hooker then ran down H Street with Smith chasing behind firing shots. A couple of shots missed Hooker, witnesses said.
Hooker then collapsed in a nearby church parking lot after being shot in the upper thigh.
At that time, the bar's security guard was able to flag down a patrolling Metro police vehicle to help detain Smith.
Hooker was transported to University Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
One witness told police he heard what sounded like 12 gun shots during the altercation.
Smith, who was arrested at the scene, was booked into Clark County Detention Center for attempted murder with a deadly weapon and murder with a deadly weapon.
