Local teachers get leg up for new school year

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Thousands of local teachers are spending the week beating the heat and brushing up on their skills for the coming school year.

Clark County School District (CCSD) is holding several training courses for teachers this week to help prepare them for the upcoming year.

More than 5,000 local teachers are participating in the summer development opportunities. Those involved said the teachers are learning skills and curriculum they will be able to put to use in their classrooms this fall.

"We're in our second-year rollout for mathematics in elementary school. And so, they're learning the content, the depth, the rigor – what kids need to know in order to be ready by exit for the exit of every school year. Not just high school, we have to get them ready every year," said mathematics coordinator Karen Schiemer.

The sessions are optional. The new school year begins August 27.
