Nevada lawmakers weigh on June jobless rate

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Nevada's Congressional delegation weighed-in Friday in response to the state's reported June unemployment rate which was at 11.6 percent.

Sen. Dean Heller, R-NV, said the following:

"The addition of new jobs in the Silver State is welcome news. However, economic recovery continues to be slow and far too many Nevadans remain out of work or underemployed. Washington needs to act on commonsense measures that spur job growth and create an environment that allows our economy to thrive. The past few weeks are prime examples of how Congress continues to miss opportunities to get Americans back to work. Two separate jobs proposals were offered, yet the majority party refused to allow open debate, stifling progress on these bills. Partisan gridlock is counterproductive and continues to prohibit a more robust recovery. It's past time for Washington to come together and start working on real solutions that will provide job creators the tools they need to grow their business and hire hard-working Americans."

Sen. Harry Reid, D-NV, issued the following statement Friday.

"Nevada's economy is slowly recovering, however, we must continue to work to create jobs and I will not rest until every hard-working Nevadan who wants a job has one. Strengthening our small business community will create jobs and expand the middle class and that's why the Senate recently considered a bill to give small businesses a 10 percent tax cut on the amount by which they increase their payrolls this calendar year. Also, small businesses would have been allowed to write off 100 percent of the cost of any major equipment or software they purchase. And just yesterday the Senate considered legislation that would have lowered taxes for businesses moving jobs to the U.S. and eliminated subsidies for those shipping jobs overseas. I will continue to work on legislation to create jobs and put Nevadans back to work and hope my Republican colleagues will join me in this effort."
