Police: Vegas mom held own child hostage

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department were on scene of a hostage situation that began shortly after 7 a.m. at the Budget Suites near Rancho Drive and Lake Mead Boulevard Saturday.

The LVMPD received a call from a female who was threatening to kill herself and her one-year-old child.

Officers and SWAT and crisis negotiators were requested.

At approximately 11:00 a.m. the mother was taken into custody without harm to her or to the child.

Detectives from the Abuse/Neglect Detail responded to the scene and initiated an investigation. As a result, detectives arrested 34-year-old Kimberly Kardell of Las Vegas and charged her with:

  • Assault with a deadly weapon
  • Kidnapping 1st degree with a weapon (for using her child as a hostage)
  • Child abuse with a deadly weapon
  • Allowing a child - controlled substances present
  • Resisting a police officer

While in custody, Kardell will be evaluated for her suicidal threats.

The child has been placed in protective custody with Child Protective Services.
