LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Federal child pornography charges were filed this week against a former Las Vegas high school softball coach accused of carrying on a relationship with a 17-year-old student.

According to the office of U.S. Attorney Daniel G. Bogden, Albert Hernandez, 43, was indicted with eight counts of sexual exploitation of a child and three counts of transporting child pornography.

Hernandez was scheduled to make an initial appearance in federal court on Thursday.

Las Vegas Metro police arrested Hernandez after the teen victim's father became suspicious of their activity.

According to the indictment, Hernandez and the student exchanged text messages between Dec. 2011 and Feb. 2012.

Many of the messages were sexual in nature, police said.

U.S. Attorney Bogden's office said Hernandez faces a minimum of 15 years for each sexual exploitation count and five years minimum for each child pornography count.

Hernandez is no longer employed with Silverado High School, the school where he coached.
