LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
Nevada saw another decline in new jobless claims in June, making it the 31st consecutive month with a drop in that category.
Bill Anderson, chief economist for Nevada's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, said 16,896 initial claims were filed in June.
However, due to seasonal adjustment, June's total jumped from May's 16,319 claims.
"Because initial claims are related to people entering unemployment, they can be considered a leading indicator of changes in overall employment levels," DETR's Chief Economist Bill Anderson said. "Particularly, this tells us that the number of people losing their jobs continues to fall, an important step to establishing steady growth in employment overall. At the same time, the rate of claims and, by extension, job loss remains elevated and the pace of employment growth is likely to remain slower than what Nevada was accustomed to prior to the recession."
June's decline reflected a 13-percent change from the total in the same month the year before. DETR said that's the first double digit percentage drop this year but below the 15 percent average seen in each month last year.
Anderson said this reflects a slowing pace of declines in claims.
