Construction will begin next week on a $4.5 million pedestrian bridge that will connect the Smith Center for the Performing Arts to the new City Hall.

The bridge will be built above the Union Pacific railroad tracks that separate the older parts of downtown from the budding Symphony Park area.

It will connect City Hall's parking garage on Main Street to the Smith Center's parking lot.

According to the city, the project is being paid for with a $500,000 grant through the Federal Highway Administration, $3.6 million in Congestion Mitigation Air Quality federal funds, and $400,000 from the city's general fund.
