Las Vegans seek refuge in Lake Mead

Posted: Updated:

As temperatures continue to climb, more people are seeking refuge in the water.

Whether for boating, riding jet skis or swimming, Las Vegans made a beeline to Lake Mead Monday. Sunday's drownings at Lake Mohave weren't on the minds of those enjoying local lakes.

"We have a lot of water and an ice chest full of energized drinks," said Michael Lawrence, who was visiting Lake Mead from Irwin, CA.

They also came prepared to have fun in the lake.

"We have inner tubes for just about everyone as well as Boogie Boards," said Lawrence.

While inner tubes and Boogie Boards may not be ideal flotation devices, they're better than nothing. On Sunday, a 37-year-old man and his 3-year-old son drowned in Lake Mohave when they apparently slipped off a raft 25 yards offshore. Neither was wearing a life jacket.

Pam Newcomb and her husband took their grandsons to Lake Mead on Monday.

"The younger one has a life vest on, and the older one swims a lot," Newcomb said.

The kids' grandfather stayed near them in the water the entire time.

Park rangers stressed that people can drown in just a few feet of water, and these deaths can be prevented by simply wearing a personal floatation device.
