Construction slated to begin on northwest Vegas park

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The second phase of construction on Raptor Play Park in northwest Las Vegas is expected to begin Monday.

The project includes adding landscaping and turf areas, lighted sidewalk extensions, a picnic shade shelter, benches and tables and off-site improvements.

Workers will also add a full-scale F-22 Raptor Stealth Fighter Jet exhibit to the existing park, located at the northwest corner of Tropical Parkway and Durango Road.

The F-22 Raptor was named after the park and will be a replica of a real fighter jet plane.

The exhibit will be the visual centerpiece of the park, with the jet appearing to fly over the monument plaza.

Off-site improvements will include paving, street lights, storm drains and sidewalks for the north side of Tropical Parkway from Durango Drive to North Bonita Vista Street.

Landscaping will be added to several medians on portions of Durango Drive alongside the park.

"I look forward to the improvements at the Raptor Play Park moving full steam ahead," said Ward 6 Councilman Steven D. Ross. "As part of the Thunderbird Family Sports Park, these new features are going to provide tremendous benefits for the community when the work is completed early next year."

The Thunderbird Family Sports Complex is a tribute to the United States Air Force families here in the valley.

Existing amenities featured at the park include play, exercise and picnic areas, a splash pad water feature and restroom facilities.

They will remain open to the public during most of the construction period.
