Pilot who disrupted Vegas flight not guilty

Posted: Updated:
LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The pilot who disrupted a Las Vegas-bound flight with rants about terrorists and September 11th was found not guilty by reason of insanity Tuesday.

The decision for Clayton Osbon's charge of interfering with a flight crew was handed down by a federal judge in Amarillo, Tex. during a bench trial.

He had been declared competent to stand trial on June 15. Osbon pleaded not guilty on June 28 in connection to the charge.

Amarillo was where Osbon's JetBlue flight from New York City's JFK International Airport diverted after the March 28 incident. Osbon had to be bound and carried off the flight. No one was injured.

Osbon faced up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine had he been convicted.

A judge ordered Osbon for further examination at a federal mental health facility. He is expected to return to court for a hearing in August to determine any restrictions to be placed on him before his release from custody.
