Clark County OK's ban on Vegas Strip vendors

Posted: Updated:
LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The Clark County Board of Commissioners Tuesday approved an ordinance effectively banning sidewalk vendors from selling water and other items to passersby on the Las Vegas Strip.

The board OK'd the decision that would make it a misdemeanor to make money from vending operations without a license.

The move came after months of weighing the issue regarding people who claim to make their sole income from peddling merchandise or getting tipped as costumed characters at the tourist hot spot.

The ordinance is not expected to affect those who pass flyers advertising adult entertainment and those costumed characters.

Last month, members of the commission remarked the ordinance was about the safety of the city's visitors.

"There's a tendency to see that we're moving in the direction of creating an outdoor circus," Commissioner Lawrence Weekly observed. "We've reached a fork in the road where there's a problem and we have to make sure that people are safe."
