LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
A Red Cross volunteer from Las Vegas is scheduled to be deployed to Montana on Tuesday to assist in wildfire relief efforts there.
Phil McKay, who served as a firefighter in the Los Angeles Fire Department, is expected to handle inspections of buildings and assets for shelters available to residents trying to flee the wildfires, the Red Cross of Southern Nevada said.
McKay currently works with the Red Cross on relationships in government affairs.
A collection of wildfires have affected Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, Utah, New Mexico and, most notably, Colorado.
The Red Cross noted more than 100 people spent Monday night in 10 shelters in Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. In addition, nearly 45,000 meals and snacks have been served in Colorado, so far.
The disaster relief organization said events like these serve as a reminder about the constant need for donations and resources to help those affected.
"With the amount of Red Cross Disaster Operations around the country at this time, we ask the public to make donations to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund," said Southern Nevada Red Cross CEO Scott Emerson. "This is a truly taxing time on the resources that the Red Cross has, and any and all financial support will enable our continued speedy response."
You can assist the Red Cross and donate to its Disaster Relief Fund by visiting redcross.org, calling 1-800-733-2767 or texting "REDCROSS" to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
