ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Have you received a text message offering you a free Walmart or Best Buy gift card?
The BBB issued a warning about the gift card text messages.
The text could read: "Walmart $1,000 gift card for the first 1,000 users to go to link removed and enter code 2938."
It could also say you have been randomly selected for a Best Buy gift.
"These messages are not only annoying, consumers need to know they're not going to stop any time soon," said Warren Clark, Better Business Bureau President. "Knowing what to do when you receive one is important."
Sometimes a link will appear in a text message.
If you click on the link in the text message to sign-up for the free gift card, you will be asked for personal information that could be used to steal your identity.
The BBB said do not respond to smishing text messages. By doing so you are confirming your cell number is active making it ripe for future smishing attempts.
